A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has on Monday awarded the sum of N2million to Mr Okwuchukwu Obiechina, the brother-in-law of the alleged kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike George, popularly known as Evans.
The court awarded the fine against the police over the “unlawful and unconstitutional” arrest and detention of Obiechina.
Obiechina has been in police custody since June 2 2017 for his alleged involvement with Evans in the kidnapping case.
His lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, prayed the court to quickly order the immediate release of his client.
Giving his ruling on Monday, Justice Mohammed Idris ordered the immediate release of Mr. Obiechina.
He also said that the remand order which the police claimed to have obtained from a magistrate court was invalid.
Justice Idris further ordered the police to tender a public apology to Obiechina which must be published in two national dailies.
