The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended the impeachment proceedings of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following earlier intervention by President Bola Tinubu.
The suspension was announced on Thursday during a plenary session at the Assembly’s resumed sitting in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Earlier in 2026, the House had initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu over alleged gross misconduct.

During the session, the Speaker presided over the reading of a notice by the Majority Leader, Major Jack, outlining the allegations.
The claims against the governor and his deputy included the demolition of the Assembly complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds meant for the Assembly Service Commission, an alleged refusal to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on legislative financial autonomy, and other acts considered gross misconduct. The notices were issued under Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In a letter dated January 16, 2026, the Assembly asked the state Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, to establish a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations. However, Justice Amadi declined, citing an existing High Court order that restrained him from taking further action.
Fubara and Odu had separately secured injunctions from the High Court in Port Harcourt, barring the Chief Judge from acting on the Assembly’s request or forming the probe panel. The Chief Judge also noted that the Speaker and the House of Assembly had appealed the High Court’s restraining order.
