Football icon, Christiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid has been named UEFA Player of the Season for 2016-2017 on Thursday following a campaign which saw the superstar help his club to the La Liga and Champions League double.
This is making it the third time of winning the award which was presented on the sidelines of the Champions League group stage draw.
His rival Lionel Messi has won the prize on two occasions and could pave the way for him to capture a fifth Ballon d’Or title.
Cristiano Ronaldo was named the UEFA Champions League Player of the Season, beating Lionel Messi and Gianluigi Buffon.
“For the national team, when I go there they always give me motivation to work hard and carry on every time. I’m so blessed – thanks also to the supporters of Real Madrid, everyone who helped me to achieve this trophy. Thank you – I’m so happy.”
Three Real Madrid stars and one Juventus star won the awards for the best players of last season’s UEFA Champions League.
Juventus goalkeeper Buffon, 39, was named the best goalkeeper of the competition after the 39–year-old’s heroics, which included shutting out Barcelona over two legs in the quarter-finals.
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was named Defender of the Season after leading the Spaniards to three Champions League trophies in four seasons.
Congratulations Rinaldo!
