Gov. Alex Otti Honours Heroines Of 1929 Aba Women’s Riot With Statues In Aba

Abia state Governor, Alex Otti has unveiled statues in Aba to immortalise the brave women of the 1929 Aba Women's War — also known as Ogu Umunwaanyi. These women rose up against colonial injustice and taxation, changing history forever.

The monument located at Azikiwe road by Asa road, in Aba honors the fearless women of the 1929 Aba Women’s Revolt. Decades before feminism became a global hashtag, Igbo women marched against taxation and colonial oppression with nothing but courage and collective will. They didn’t wait for permission to fight for their land. They stood firm.

Led by the fearless Nwanyeruwa, thousands of women stood together, spoke out, and forced real change. Today, their courage is carved in stone, remembered forever.
