'I’m Struggling' – Papa Ajasco Cries Out

Veteran actor, Abiodun Ayoyinka has opened up about the struggles he has faced despite achieving nationwide recognition for his famous role as Papa Ajasco.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, the actor explained that the ownership rights attached to the character have limited his ability to take advantage of opportunities outside the long-running comedy series.

According to Ayoyinka, the character is legally registered by Wale Adenuga through his production outfit Wale Adenuga Productions, meaning he cannot freely use the identity for personal projects or commercial engagements.

He noted that although many brands are interested in working with him, they usually want him to appear as Papa Ajasco, something he cannot do without official approval.

“The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anybody that wants to use me outside wants me with the character, with everything that I have, but it has never been easy for me.”

Ayoyinka said he does not hold the rights to the name or the costume associated with the character.

“I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume.”

He added that the strong public identification with the role has also made it difficult for him to secure opportunities outside the character.

“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa Ajasco, dress like Papa Ajasco, look like Papa Ajasco. It is always difficult for me to do it.”

The actor also revealed that he previously worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.

Despite his decades-long career, Ayoyinka said life has become challenging in recent years.

“Things have never been okay for years now. I retired five years ago, and it has never been easy for me to move around and connect with people.

“I’m always thinking every day. Look at my home—I don’t have my own house. I don’t have a car.”

Ayoyinka became widely known for portraying Papa Ajasco in the popular Nigerian television comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, produced by Wale Adenuga Productions, which for years remained one of the country’s most loved family sitcoms.
