World football governing body FIFA has handed sanctions to both Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo DR) following breaches of its regulations during their 2026 World Cup qualifier continental playoff.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were eliminated after losing 4-3 on penalties to Congo DR, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Fans from both nations were reported to have engaged in disorderly conduct that violated FIFA rules.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary report, Nigeria was sanctioned for breaches relating to order and security, including the throwing of objects during the match, in violation of Article 17.2.b of FIFA’s disciplinary code.
Congo DR, meanwhile, was charged for its fans’ use of laser pointers or similar electronic devices aimed at Nigerian players, under Article 17.2.c and related provisions.
Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss Francs, while Congo DR received a 5,000 Swiss Francs penalty. FIFA noted that some disciplinary decisions are subject to appeal, but it did not specify whether the sanctions against Nigeria and Congo DR are eligible for appeal.
The Zurich-based organization also remained silent on Nigeria’s complaint regarding Congo DR’s alleged use of ineligible players during the playoff match.
Congo DR advanced to the intercontinental playoff following the victory and has announced its squad for the tournament in Mexico later this month, which will determine the final two teams to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
