In Congo, Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, head of the Congolese Football Federation, was handed a life sentence on Tuesday over a major corruption scandal.
Mayolas was convicted in absentia for money laundering, embezzlement, and forgery linked to the federation’s finances.
His wife and son received the same life sentence. Court documents state he allegedly misappropriated nearly $1.3 million FIFA funds.
The verdicts conclude an eight-month investigation, which authorities say exposed widespread financial misconduct within FECOFOOT.
