The African Union has suspended Madagascar just hours after the leader of a military coup announced plans to be sworn in as the country’s new president
AU Commission Chairperson, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf confirmed the decision in a statement on Wednesday, declaring that “the rule of law must prevail over the rule of force.” The suspension takes immediate effect.
Crisis in the escalated after President Andry Rajoelina fled the country amid mounting unrest and fears for his safety. Weeks of anti-government “Gen-Z” protests—fueled by anger over worsening water and electricity shortages—had drawn in sections of the military, further destabilizing his administration. His decision to sack the entire government only deepened public outrage and intensified calls for his resignation.
Before leaving the country, Rajoelina attempted to dissolve the National Assembly by decree, but lawmakers rejected the order and voted to impeach him instead.
In response, Colonel Michael Randrianirina and his elite CAPSAT military unit announced that they had seized power, dissolved major state institutions, and would form a transitional government to steer the country’s affairs.
