The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State has banned all forms of “final examinations signing-off” celebrations by final year students.
The University Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Gloria Okeke, announced the ban on Wednesday, citing recurring incident of chaos, violence and disruption of normal University activities associated with the events.
The statement reads:
“The University Management wishes to inform you that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration("signing off") related to final examinations by final year students are completely and indefinitely banned from the University premises.
“This decision is in response to recurring incident of chaos, violence and disruption of normal University activities associated with these events. Furthermore, the University has been concerned about the presences of unauthorized individual on campus, posing a threat to the safety and security of students, staff and the broader University community.
“In fulfillment of its obligation to maintain order, protect life, and safeguard property within the University, Management has taken this decisive step to ban all such activities, deeming them unacceptable. Any student found to be involved in or participating in any form of orchestration("signing off") or related activities risks severe disciplinary measures, including but not limited to rustication.
“Furthermore, any Outsiders who enters the University premises in furtherance of such activities risks arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct causing a breach of peace. The University Management is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for academic pursuits and will not tolerate actions that undermine this commitment.
“We urge all students to focus on their academic responsibilities and to report any instance of misconduct or threats to safety to the appropriate authorities.”
The signing-off tradition in Nigerian universities typically involves final-year students marking the end of their exams with celebrations, writing farewell messages on each other’s uniforms, and sometimes engaging in rowdy behaviour.
