Countries both developed and developing ones are seen welcoming important technological feats and Nigeria is one of such many countries.
The introduction of the Bvas voting system was a welcomed development in nigeria which was introduced by INEC (independent National Electoral Commission).
INEC has deployed Bvas voting system in the Isoko South Constituency 1 bye-election in Delta State on 10 September, 2021 which wasn't much of a success then.
However Bvas voting system was also used in Anambra making it the first time of using Bvas voting system for a state election contest.
But before I digress further
What is BVAS voting system?
BVAS is an acronym for Bimodal voters accreditation system.
It is an electronic venture used for scrutinizing, checking and conducting of elections.
INEC after series of discovery that the elections done through human count has alot of errors arising from human errors both intentional ones and non-intentional, decided to make use of technology to carry out the process.
This included the invention of a card reader, zpad etc.
The zpad was replaced with the BVAS which was reputed to achieve convergence of the essential features of these solutions in combining voter enrolment, voter accreditation, and results interface capabilities in one device.
This should eliminate the gaps that enable analogue manipulation of numbers in elections. The voter accreditation capability combines fingerprint, Iris and facial recognition technologies supposedly to eliminate guesswork in voter identification and accreditation. To preclude hacks, the application requires regular software updates and serviceable broadband access, requiring 4G technology for convenient download.
BVAS is a technology solution based on Artificial Intelligence and thus Bvas helps in minimizing electoral malpractices where analogue methods are replaced for modern ones...
For BVAS to strife, more functions should be added to enhance the electoral process helping it to be a free and fair one
Not only that it was discovered that BVAS is geospatial, it has also been noticed that BVAS will need complementary systems to function effectively thus modifications should be done about this as well.
The network failure associated with Nigeria is another problem which should be handled.
In summary BVAS voting system is a welcomed one compared to anomalies associated with manual handling of electoral processes
